Operational Lease

The most common scams in operational leasing that make you pay more than you should

The most common scams in operational leasing that make you pay more than you should

You are probably familiar with what operational leasing is and the benefits it offers.
If not, operational leasing allows you to use a vehicle without ownership obligations, which is ideal for companies and individuals with specific business needs.

However, despite all the advantages we mentioned, with some rent-a-car agencies you may encounter potential pitfalls and hidden clauses that can result in additional costs and complications, not necessarily through your own fault.

Trust is hard to earn, and even harder to keep, and you’ll agree that there is no worse feeling than realizing you’ve been deceived at the moment you believed you were in safe hands.

To help you avoid such situations, we have prepared an overview of the most common irregularities and unclear terms in operational leasing, along with explanations of how we at BizRent strive to provide transparent and fair conditions so that our clients are satisfied and treated properly.

Does the law protect operational leasing users?

In Serbia, operational leasing is not specifically regulated by a single law that thoroughly protects the user in every situation. In practice, these contracts fall under general contract law and the agreement between the two parties, which means that a large part of your protection depends on what is defined in the contract itself.

In other words: what you sign is what applies.

The law protects you from obviously unfair and illegal provisions, but it does not cover every detail of the business relationship. If certain costs, penalties, or terms are clearly stated in the contract, they are legally binding even if they later seem unfavorable to you.

1. Attractive “low” monthly payments, or is there something hidden?

Many rent-a-car agencies and leasing companies present a base price without detailing mandatory costs such as insurance and administration.

This means that, even though the agency appears to include basic costs in the initial offer, the user will later discover that insurance and similar costs are charged additionally. Among the additional costs are administrative fees and contract processing costs, items that agencies include to cover internal processes such as document preparation and handling.

Insurance is another item that can be an unpleasant surprise, as agencies often present it as included in the price, but charge it separately, outside the base monthly fee. Users usually assume all costs are covered by the initial rate, only to later realize that insurance and administrative costs are listed as separate items.

Another item that may surprise you is “regular maintenance.”
Although this sounds like a basic service, many agencies charge extra for minor repairs and inspections under this category, even though users expect it to be included in the agreed monthly payment.

In the end, the total monthly cost can be up to 30% higher than originally agreed, which is not a small difference.

How BizRent handles this

At BizRent, we believe that transparency builds long-term trust. All costs are clearly presented and explained to clients before signing the contract. There are no hidden details with us: what you see in the offer is exactly what your company pays, without unpleasant surprises that could strain your budget.

2. High penalties for exceeding mileage

Mileage and exceeding mileage are key elements in any car leasing contract.

With most rent-a-car agencies, the available options are typically 15,000 or 30,000 kilometers per year, which does not meet the needs of every user, especially when the vehicle is used for business purposes across different industries.

The reasons why users choose a lower mileage option vary, but it is usually either a desire to save money by choosing a cheaper option or the inability to select a higher option (because it is not offered).

However, if the agreed mileage limit is exceeded, users face penalties for every additional kilometer, which can be unrealistically high with some agencies.

How BizRent provides more options for its users

At BizRent, we understand that different clients have different mileage needs.

That is why we offer flexible options: for diesel vehicles, annual mileage options of 15,000, 30,000, 45,000, and 60,000 kilometers are available, while for gasoline vehicles the options are 20,000, 40,000, and 60,000 kilometers per year.

If the agreed limit is exceeded, the additional fee per kilometer is €0.15, which is clearly defined in the contract.

We enable our clients to easily track their vehicle mileage, and our team is always available to provide support and help choose the optimal package that suits different business needs.

3. Paying for “excessive wear and tear”

Some agencies use “excessive wear and tear” as a cover for additional charges at the end of the leasing contract.

Under this term, they often include minor damages such as small scratches on the paint, signs of everyday use on seats or interior surfaces, and even minor aesthetic changes that naturally occur during regular driving.

Although users expect such damage to be part of normal use and covered by the monthly payment, even the smallest mark can be charged under the pretext of “excessive wear and tear.”

How BizRent approaches this

At BizRent, we know that minor damage is a normal part of everyday driving, so we assess wear and tear of our vehicles fairly and objectively.

Additional charges are applied only in cases where the damage exceeds normal use, meaning for more serious damage that genuinely requires extra investment.

4. Complicated and expensive contract termination

It happens that, due to changes in business plans or financial circumstances, users want to terminate the contract.
However, with many agencies on our market, terminating a contract comes with high costs. In cases of early termination, some agencies require payment of all remaining installments at once, which can be a significant financial burden.

In addition to high fees, termination may include extra costs such as administrative processing fees or charges for evaluating the vehicle’s residual value.

Another issue is that termination procedures are often complex and involve multiple steps, making the process slow and difficult.

How BizRent handles this

At BizRent, we understand that life circumstances change. That is why we offer flexible early termination terms, without “hidden” costs.

All expenses are clearly presented in advance, and our team supports users through every step, making the termination process as simple as possible without additional burdens.

5. Replacement vehicle of a lower class and additional charges?

In case of a breakdown, a replacement vehicle can create more problems than expected.

When clients request a replacement vehicle due to a breakdown or servicing, they may receive a lower-class model than the one they originally used. This can be a serious issue, especially if the vehicle is used daily for business or for transporting important clients where maintaining a certain image matters.

In addition, some agencies charge extra for using a replacement vehicle, while clients assume these costs are already included in the leasing price.

These details are not always clearly stated in the contract, so we recommend confirming them before signing so you know what to expect if you ever need a replacement vehicle.

How it works with us

At BizRent, the replacement vehicle you receive is either another model you already have under contract or one of the newer models from our fleet. You will never receive a lower-class vehicle than the one you are already using. When signing the contract, our team explains all these conditions in detail so you always know what to expect.

In this way, we guarantee your mobility without unexpected costs!
